What is a Glass Safety & Security Consultant?

A couple of months ago, I had a conversation with a guy that I had neither met or spoken to before. He said something which now looking back, I wish I had acted on much earlier. He said “I never knew your job existed!!” to which I replied “well, why wouldn’t it??” If I had been on the ball, I would have written this short piece back then.

So how many other people don’t actually understand what I do??

For the past 20 years, I have been surveying commercial premises to make sure, from a H&S perspective, that the glass installed meets building regs (Document K) and also BS6262 part 4 2005 which believe it or not, was made mandatory under The Consumer Protection Act 1987, and if the building is occupied too, that it meets Regulation 14, 15 & 16  of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. The 2 scenarios are both separate in their own way which is very often missed & confusing. I write detailed reports on what I find and pass on to the client so they can see what they have to look at to bring their glass up to the required level.

I am solely independent of any glass manufacturer, glass installer, window film manufacturer, fitter etc etc.

I also survey commercial properties from a glass security perspective. This can be from a break in and stopping the intruder gaining entry in to the property.

With the terrorist threat in the UK at the high level it is, there is a need to look at glass in a blast situation. A piece of glass flying through the air at tremendous speed can inflict horrendous injuries. These injuries need to be kept to a minimum.

My main objective is to stop these horrific injuries that glass can inflict when propelled through the air after an explosion. Again, I will survey the glass in the property, show the client what I have found and work with them to find a sensible solution.
